Cluster events and initiatives

Welcome to ICT Illawarra’s (ICTI) feedback forum. What events or initiatives should we be focusing on? Do you recognise a good idea when you see one? We want to hear from you!

The cluster should...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Identify, contact and engage interested local organisations/people

To be a success, the ICTIllawarra needs as many local IT minds to be part of the initiative as possible. From the small web developer through to larger companies - there are some great people and ideas out there.

The agenda then has to be of a local nature, for example how can we use IT to push our region forward in terms of jobs, or what opportunities the region has to gain IT projects.

If the ICT Illawarra does not focus on driving actual outcomes out of it's existence then it is not going to capture the membership or…

    • Promote Wollonong as the HQ for the National Broadband Network intiative

      From the Illawarra Mercury:

"NSW Premier Nathan Rees has launched a bid to have the head office of the Federal Government's $43 billion National Broadband Network in Sydney as Illawarra experts urge Wollongong's case.

Just weeks after Mr Rees visited the Illawarra to announce his jobs package and acknowledge the region's unemployment plight, the State Government has backed a campaign that will benefit the state capital.

Geoff McQueen, managing director of Wollongong-based internet company Internetrix - one of only six companies globally to be recognised by Google as a technology partner in 2008 - said there was no reason the…

        • Run a meeting looking at business opportunities with virtual worlds, gaming and augmented reality

I propose we run a meeting looking at business opportunities with virtual worlds, gaming and augmented reality. The field of software development is becoming increasingly commoditised, so it makes sense to look at cutting edge areas where expertise (particularly creative and multimedia skill) is still required. Mobile computing, particularly mobile phones, are also becoming increasingly powerful, which makes them ideal platforms for gaming and augmented reality applications for business and consumers. In the Illawarra region we have two local experts who specialise in virtual worlds (Jo Kay and David Holloway) and I imagine that the UoW would also have expertise…

          • Do a presentation on Google Wave

I recently received an invitation to participate in Googles new communication/collaboration platform - Google Wave. After a few weeks of developing and exploring I thought it would be good to give a talk on the opportunities the Wave technology offers the ICT sector in the Illawarra.

            • support the introduction of business class train travel

The issue of transport links to Sydney has come up time and time again as factor restricting the expansion of the IT sector in our region. The Centre for Independent Studies has recommended reintroducing business class travel to the CityRail network. Read the full report here http://www.cis.org.au/issue_analysis/IA119/IA119.pdf

              • Join the new eGov cluster

"Australia’s peak IT research and commercialisation agency NICTA has joined with the ACT Government to create a new public-private R&D cluster focused on government technology."
                http://www.itwire.com/content/view/27557/53/
ICTI should explore the possibility of joining this new eGov cluster

                • Examine the evoling nature of Communications

The online environment creates many different avenues that allow people to communicate, from heritage media streaming to exclusive online podcasts. Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn let use group together in new ways.

How can we help the non-techies take advantage of these new media resources, and what impacts can they have on society?

                  • Run a panel discussion on business models

I thought it might be interesting to host a panel discussion on the pro and cons of different IT business modes - in particular consulting, hosted (software as a service), licensed commercial, commercial open source and open source.

                    • Participate in the NSW State Plan discussions

The state government has invited feedback on the State Plan. A set of online feedback forums have been created for each major region across NSW, including one for the Illawarra http://nswstateplan.net.au/illawarra?module=forum
Input can also be provided via this website, which will also include independently-moderated regional discussion forums during August and early September.

A casual co-working group would provide the opportunity for us to explore the idea of co-working, in order to see if it would add value to local small and micro-businesses who currently work from home.

                        • Developing Australia's Own Silicon Valley

While this goal is ambitious, Wollongong provides the perfect hub to further develop it's IT expertise. What makes Silicon Valley special is its mix of high calibre start-ups, service providers and venture capital funding, all of which branches out from Stanford University.

Examining how to model Australia on the US or develop our own culture of innovation will be dependent on (a) the start-up community (to develop the innovation) (b) venture funding (to invest invest in innovation) (c) intellectual property (to globalise and protect the innovation ) and, perhaps, most importantly (d) university and government funding (particularly during the early…
